USA to neutralize Iran’s influence on Iraq
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe US insists on more secret operations to prevent Iran’s influence
in Iraq, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Unlike the operations against Al-Qaeda in 2001, this time the actions
are limited. Officials refused to give information on the operations.
The US pointed out that Iran is training Shiite militants in Iraq and
provides them with weapons and IRAMs (Improvised Rocket-Assisted
Mortar). Iran has also activated support for the Syrian authorities,
providing equipment to suppress anti-government protests. Tehran
supports Shiites in Bahrain.
Iran has recently been trying to expand its influence to Iraq and
further throughout the Middle East. As a result, there is an increase
in arms smuggling.
The situation is complicated by the reduction of the US presence in
Iraq. Many expect Iran’s influence to increase when the US troops
leave in 2011.
The UN has banned arms purchases from Iran. Tehran denies arms
smuggling and interference in the affairs of Arab states.
