Syria is holding its first parliamentary elections. The elections for the People's Council are proceeding through indirect voting, following the dissolution of the legislative body after President Bashar al-Assad's departure last December.

At the same time, given the unstable situation in the country, the Syrian authorities have decided to form parliament using an unusual method, based on a presidential decree signed by Ahmed Al-Sharaa on August 20 established a "temporary electoral procedure".

Under this system, 7,000 electors (two-thirds of the People's Council) organized into regional colleges will elect 140 parliament members, while President al-Sharaa will appoint the remaining 70 members (a third of Syria's parliament).
