Moscow celebrates Airborne Forces Day and Ilya's Day

Today, Moscow traditionally held a religious procession and a communal prayer to celebrate both holidays – Airborne Forces Day and Ilya's Day, with participants marching from Ilyinka to Red Square.

Both holidays fall on August 2 — the date in 1930 when the first paratrooper unit landed in Voronezh.

August 2 is also the feast day of the Prophet Ilya, considered the patron saint of the airborne troops.
