Azerbaijan and Slovenia in second round of elections to UN Security Council

Guatemala, Morocco and Pakistan were elected non-permanent members of the Security Council today, as a result of the elections held in the UN General Assembly. Kyrgyzstan failed to gain the necessary two-thirds of the votes and was eliminated from the struggle. Azerbaijan will continue to fight for a seat on the UN Security Council with Slovenia in the second round of voting. The remaining seat will be contested beween Togo and Mauritania, ITAR-TASS reports.

The UN Security Council has five permanent members - Britain, China, Russia, the USA and France - and 10 rotating non-permanent members, elected every two years. In contrast to the five permanent members, they do not have the power of veto.
