Azerbaijan in UN Security Council
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe election of Azerbaijan to the Security Council of the UN is not a common event, and it promotes the state’s image. First of all, it is evidence of successful diplomatic course, Baku believes. To be a member of such respected organization as the UN SC is a demanding challenge, but most experts are sure Baku will succeed in it.
Azerbaijan was elected to the position of a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the UN on Monday, October 24. Competition for the place in the SC was tense, which is not typical for such events. “In comparison with other elections, this year competition is tense. There are few examples of it in history of the General Assembly,” the deputy head of the department on foreign affairs of the presidential administration of Azerbaijan, Novruz Mamedov, said ahead the elections.
Voting was postponed by Monday, because last week members of the UN couldn’t choose between Slovenia and Azerbaijan. On weekend ahead the second round of voting French diplomacy lobbied through Slovenia for non-permanent membership of the Security Council of the UN, the American portal Reporter writes. However, ahead the last round the foreign minister of Slovenia Samuel Zbogar stated about refusal from competition.
In the last round 155 countries supported Azerbaijan, 24 abstained for voting and 13 voted for Slovenia. In previous rounds Azerbaijan got more votes than Slovenia, but wasn’t managed to gain demanded 129 votes.
The General Assembly elects 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council, paying attention to a country’s participation in promotion of international peace and security and in achievement of other targets of the organization. Azerbaijan not only became a member of the Security Council, he defeated the country-member of the EU. The UN countries understand that election of Azerbaijan will contribute to providing peace and stability. Today Azerbaijan has an opportunity to prove it can take place in any international institute.
