LAS plans to adopt new measures against Syrian regime
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe League of Arab States (LAS) is preparing "tough new measures" against
Syria, which might be adopted at a meeting of foreign ministers on
Saturday, RIA-Novosti cites Egyptian newspaper "Al Ahraim."
Al-Ahram reports that the Secretary General of the Arab League, Nabil al-Arabi,
will meet with the head of the opposition Syrian National Council in Cairo
in the coming days. It is expected that Syrian opposition representatives
will present their data on conflicts in the country at this meeting.
A week ago, the authorities in Damascus adopted a plan of the Arab League to
resolve the crisis in Syria. In particular it provides for a ceasefire
against civilians, withdrawal of military equipment from settlements and free
access to Arab representatives on the territory of Syrian cities, as well
as release of all those arrested since the beginning of the unrest.
The opposition claims that the Syrian authorities continue to suppress the
power of "peaceful demonstration", causing numerous deaths. At the same
time, the Syrian authorities claim that the military and police are acting against
militants receiving foreign funding who are attacking government
facilities and terrorizing the population.
