Syria wants to see Russia as a mediator in the crisis

Syria would welcome the nomination of Russia as a mediator in the conflict in the Arab republic,  Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said at a press conference in Damascus.

Last week the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution criticizing the Syrian authorities, affected by violence and unrest. This step followed Russia and China blocking a UN Security Council resolution on sanctions against the Syrian authorities.

Russia opposes interference in the affairs of Syria because they believe that the Syrian people are able to solve their problems peacefully, in the manner of political dialogue. As stated previously, the chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, Mikhail Margelov, Moscow is closely  following the events in this country, examining the positions of all Syrian political parties, and is calling for a peaceful resolution of conflicts. The latest delegation of the Syrian opposition in Moscow was received at a high level by the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, and Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council, Ilyas Umakhanov.

The Syrian authorities have assured the Foreign Minister that they are ready for dialogue with all who wish to participate, including those with the foreign opposition, representatives of the regime guarantee their safety when entering the country.
