Dagestan often has protests against kidnappings. The latest protests took place in Makhachkala, with some 2,500 people involved. A special working group was formed to study such cases.

26 complaints were filed in 2010. 18 people were found and returned home. Others have not been found. Four people have been found dead.

The kidnappings of 13 citizens have not yet been confirmed. 8 of them were taken to police stations for checking, five were detained over crime suspicions.

The prosecutor’s office says that some kidnapped people were part of illegal armed formations, according to the Interior Ministry and the FSB Directorate in Dagestan.
