South Ossetia's elections

Read on the website Vestnik Kavkaza

Less than two weeks have passed since the second round of the parliamentary elections in South Ossetia and the republic is going to hold another election. The Supreme Court of the republic announced that the elections were invalid, claiming too many violations were registered. The court also said that Alla Dzhioyeva, an opposition candidate, was responsible for these violations and prohibited her participation in the coming polls.

However Dzhioyeva didn't recognize the court's decision and proclaimed herself the elected president of South Ossetia. Former president Eduard Kokoyty called upon the Supreme Court to allow Dzhioyeva to take part in the elections as her supporters crowded the streets of Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia.

Russia announced it won't interfere, but Sergey Vinokurov, a Kremlin official, was sent to South Ossetia to encourage the parties to come to an agreement. 7 years ago Russia managed to settle a similar conflict in Abkhazia, another Caucasian republic, perhaps the Russian authorities will manage to do the same in South Ossetia.
