The Chinese foreign ministry spokesman says his country hopes that stability will continue in the strategic Strait of Hormuz and no action will be taken to destabilize this international waterway, Press TV reports.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Hung Lei said Chinese public opinion is very sensitive about developments in Iran.

Asked about escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf which have pushed up international oil prices, he said, “China hopes that peace and stability can be maintained in the strait.”

His remarks came after repeated warning by Tehran that the country can respond to proposed Western oil sanctions and threats against Iran by choking oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz.
