Azerbaijani sport: 2011 round up
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe year 2011 was successful for Azerbaijani sportsmen. Azerbaijan organized 42 international competitions; Azerbaijani sportsmen won 705 medals (276 of them in Olympic sports) in 275 international tournaments. The ‘Rabita’ volleyball club was declared the best team of the year.
Four Olympic complexes were completed in 2011.
Baku hosted a number of prestigious international contests. World judo tournament ‘World Masters’ held in January was one of them. As the result of this tournament, two Azeri sportsmen received the right to participate in London summer Olympics. Another important contest was the tae kwon do contest. Five Azerbaijani teams participated in it, and for the first time in the history of Azerbaijani sport woman tae kwon do-fighter won a ticket to the Olympics.
2011 was also rich in boxing events for Azerbaijan, the most important of which was the World Championship held in September. Four Azeri sportsmen won Olympic licenses there. Magomedrasul Medjidov of Azerbaijan became the World Boxing Champion and the second sportsmen from Azerbaijan to win this title. Magomedrasul Medjidov was also named the best boxer of the world by the AIBA. According to the sportsman, it is a great honor to receive such an award and he hopes to perform with the same deal of success on the Olympics.
