Armenian National Congress to renew protests for fair elections
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe Armenian National Congress (ANC), a union of opposition, will renew protests on Thursday, demanding resignation of President Serzh Sargsyan, formation of a mechanism of fair parliamentary polls. The protest will also commemorate tragic events in Yerevan, RIA Novosti reports.
Armenian opposition under leadership of Ter-Petrosyan, a candidate for president on February 19, 2008, losing to Serzh Sargsyan, held protests at the center of Yerevan on February 20, expressing discontent with vote results. Protests turned into disorders and clashes with the police. As a result, 10 people died and over 200 were injured.
ANC press secretary Arman Musinyan said that it will be a commemorative protest, but serious political steps will be made as well. The ANC will announce its activities in the last two months. The ANC does not believe in results of social polls, which state that the congress is the third most popular political force after the Republican Party and Prosperous Armenia.
Musinyan said that they have only one MP.
The Armenian National Congress headed by first President Levon Ter-Petrosyan, was formed on August 1, 2008. It consists of 18 political parties and organizations. It demands restoration of constitutional rights of citizens and fair parliamentary and presidential polls.
