Russia may reach agreement on US missile shield

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said at the conference on Euro-Atlantic community that Russia has still received no proof that European missile defenses would not be used against it. He believes that Russia may still reach an agreement on missiles and urged NATO to cooperate within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

Medvedev warned against statements on threats of using force against any states. He reminded about attempts to use force to make Syria and Iran more democratic states. The president warned about need for permission of the UN Security Council for such acts.

The Russian president says that the Euro-Atlantic community cannot provide full security. He emphasized that Russian initiative on European security stresses on fulfillment of international obligations, respect for sovereignty and territorial unity and political independence without use of force.

Development of the document on European security was ordered by Medvedev in Berlin on June 4, 2008. One of the document’s priorities is guarantees of equal security, control of weapons and their quantities. It also states that no country should have exclusive rights for maintenance of peace and stability in Europe.
