Turkey to launch first nuclear power plant in 2019

The Turkish nuclear power plant in Akkuyu will be launched in 2019, Turkish Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz said, Trend reports.

Russia has invested $700 million in the project. The final sum will total $2.4 billion.

Yildiz said that Turkey is negotiating construction of the second and third nuclear power plants with three other states.

Turkey’s state company, EÜAŞ, and Canada’s Candu signed a contract on cooperation in nuclear energy.

Turkey and China signed a deal on peaceful exploitation of nuclear energy. A similar document was signed with South Korea and Russia.

Russia ratified an intergovernmental agreement with Turkey to build and exploit the first Turkish nuclear power plant in late 2010.
