Where do people emigrate to from the South Caucasus?

According to research conducted by the "European Initiative - Liberal Academy", commissioned by the World Bank, about 1,058,300 people have emigrated from Georgia since the country acquired independence in 1991. The number represents 25.1% of the population. The report notes that emigrants from Georgia have moved to such countries as Russia, Armenia, Ukraine, Greece, Israel, the USA, Germany, Cyprus, Spain and Turkey. 88 percent of all Georgian emigrants are in these 10 countries. 


The migration of citizens of Georgia to the EU has had a clear direction. According to a report released by the Trend information agency, five EU member states account for 88% of emigrants from Georgia in the EU. These five countries are Greece, Germany, Cyprus, Spain and Latvia.

Azerbaijan has been marked not by emigration but in fact immigration in the last years. In 2011 about 77.1% of immigrants arrived in Azerbaijan from Russia, 8.1% - from Kazakhstan, 4.3% - from Ukraine. As for emigrants, about 45% left for Russia, 32% for Kazakhstan and 8.5% for Ukraine.

Over the past 10 years 173 thousand people left Armenia. During the recent census, 12% of the population or 414,000 people were registered as people who had temporarily left the country. This figure indicated the number of migrant workers.
