Georgian workers opposed to Chinese construction company
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaWorkers at the bypass road to Kobuleti (a Black Sea resort of Adjara) have declared a strike due to harsh labour conditions and rude treatment by Chinese employers, Trend reports.
The Asian Development Bank issued a loan worth $140 million for road construction.
The workers say that their terms of contract are violated, they are forced to work 12 hours a day without additional payments and without a lunch break. They say that the cost of their uniforms and food is deducted from their wages. The workers demand their contracts be fulfilled and wages increased by 25 laris.
The bypass road to Kobuleti is being constructed by the Chinese company Sinorhydro for the third year. The company disagrees with the demands of the workers, but promised to consider them. Chaojin Shiu said that the workers are forced to work for an extra three hours without enough food. Deductions from wages were made due to loss of instruments.
The strikers refuse to work until their demands are fulfilled.
