Armenia marks Day of First Republic

Armenia is marking the 94th anniversary of the First Republic today.

The Trans-Caucasus Seym collapsed on May 26. Georgia became an independent state on that day. The Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun gave the Armenian National Council in Tiflis authority.

Armenia became independent on May 28. The Western and Eastern Bureau of Dashnaktsutyun held a session on May 29, appointing architect Ovanes Kajaznuni Prime Minister with Yerevan the capital of Armenia in 1918.

The first government of Armenia was formed on July 24, 1918. The three-coloured flag (red, blue, orange) was approved. The national symbol was approved in 1920. It was designed by Alexander Tamanyan and Akob Kanachyan.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, Speaker of Parliament Samvel Nikoyan, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, Secretary of the National Security Council Artur Bagdasaryan and other high-ranking officials arrived in Sardapat.

Catholicos Patriarch of All Armenians Karekin II commemorated all people who sacrificed their lives for Armenian statehood.

State leaders attending the celebrations congratulated people on the Day of the First Republic.
