Kofi Annan, special envoy of the UN and LAS to Syria, gave a call to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss the crisis, RBC reports.

Annan informed the minister about the visit to Syria and the situation. Lavrov emphasized that the events in Syria prove that Annan’s peace plan has no alternative bases for political and diplomatic resolution of the crisis.

Lavrov reminded that Russia carries out regular contacts with Syrian authorities and opposition to encourage a dialogue.

Annan thanked Russia for active assistance in peaceful resolution of the crisis in Syria and confirmed devotion to realize the peace plan.

The UN organized an emergency council in Geneva last week due to the massacre in Houla. A resolution condemning the Syrian government for the tragedy was passed. Russia voted against it, stating that the document has a unilateral approach to the problem.
