Mohamed Morsi becomes new President of Egypt

Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Barack Obama, British Foreign Minister William Hague and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have congratulated Mohamed Morsi on becoming the new President of Egypt, ITAR-TASS reports.

Iran has congratulated the President as well.

Morsi said that he plans to normalized ties with Iran and form strategic balance in the region.

The Egyptian president won the elections on Sunday with 51.7% of vote.

Egypt and Iran broke diplomatic relations in 1980, as a result of Egypt signing a peace treaty with Israel. Iran has been striving to restore ties with Egypt after the revolution in February 2011, especially in the light of activation of the Muslim Brotherhood Movement. Iran offers economic support to Egypt to withstand US pressure.
