Vice-Admiral Chirkov: Russian naval base in Tartus, Syria continues to operate

Russia has no plans to abandon its naval base in the Syrian port of Tartus, Russian Navy Commander Vice-Admiral Viktor Chirkov told RIA-Novosti in St. Petersburg.

Chirkov said that the naval base in Tartus is important to Russia for operations in the Mediterranean and the struggle against pirates in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean.
