Speaking at a conference of intellectuals organized by the Calcalist newspaper (The Economist) of Israel in Tel Aviv, former Mossad chief Meir Dagan said that there would be no major war in the Middle East in the next 3-5 years.

The official said that forecasts are based on correlations of probabilities. Peaceful development is the most likely course of events. There are no clear long-term forecasts as to whether radical Islam would strengthen or weaken in the region. There may still be lunatics among the leaders of fundamentalism who would provoke a new war, but it is very unlikely, the Mossad director insists.

Dagan noted that relative stability in Israel and Palestine could be used to reach an agreement, but none of the sides are making such efforts. Dagan went on to say that the loss of time by Israeli and Palestinian leaders may end up in another burst of terror and bloodshed. Dagan believes that Israel is more interested in settling the conflict than the Palestinians, because it would allow a strengthening of its political positions in Europe and globally.
