Six detained over attacks on Muslim clerics in Kazan

Six suspects have been arrested after attacks in Russia’s Tatarstan region wounded a top Muslim spiritual leader and killed another.

Mufti Ildis Faizov was rushed to hospital after three powerful blasts hit his car on Thursday.

His deputy, Valiulla Yakupov, was shot dead outside his home.

The mostly Muslim republic of Tatarstan has previously been held up as a model of religious tolerance.

Russian investigators believe the attacks, which happened just hours before the holy month of Ramadan began, were provoked by faith and financial disputes.
