In Georgia, environmentalists have initiated the gathering of signatures for a petition to suspend the construction of DaryalGES in the Kazbegi region of the republic, Trend reports.

"We demand to halt the construction of DaryalGES up until the experts establish the optimal amount of water in the river Terek, which will ensure the preservation of both biological and landscape diversity of the Daryal Gorge, as well as the minimal impact on ethnographic and tourist potential," - the petition reads.

The construction of the DaryalGES in Kazbegi region has been going on for several months. According to the project, the river Terek must be enclosed in an 8-kilometer tunnel derivation.

According to environmentalists, it will cause irreparable damage to the Daryali gorge and its ecosystem.

As reported previously by VK, on July 16 a rally in support of the preservation of the Daryali gorge took place in a village in the Kazbegi region of Georgia.
