Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attended a session at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Mecca initiated by Riyadh and proposed formation of an institution to settle problems in the Muslim society and disputes of Muslims states, RIA Novosti reports.

King of Saudi Arabia Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud proposed Muslim leaders to form a Center for Muslim Dialogue.

Ahmadinejad said that the western example of imposing conditions to other states, the way US does, should not be an example for Muslim states. Interference of NATO and western states cannot bring freedom and democracy, he insists.

56 states are attending the two-day session to discuss the Syrian conflict.

OIC foreign ministers met in Jidda and decided to freeze Syria’s membership in OIC. Iran is opposed to the idea. Syrian membership in the Arab League was frozen in November.

OIC was founded in September 1969 for social, economic and political solidarity. It has 57 members. Russia is an observer.

The conflict in Syria has been ongoing since March 2011. The UN says that over 17,000 people have died. Syrian authorities say that they face well-armed opposition supported by foreign states. Russia and China fear that foreign intervention in Syria and loss of statehood would escalate the conflict.
