Russia to form own naval air defenses

Russia will form an analogue of US’ Aegis system, as stated by Anatoly Shlemov, head of the Department of Gosoboronzakaz of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, RIA Novosti reports.

Aegis analogues will be developed by enterprises of Almaz-Antey.

Aegis combat system may hit targets on the ground, under water and in the air. It uses the AN/SPY-1A, В or D radars with 4 flat antennae with a power of 5 MW. They acquire 250-300 targets and choose the most threatening of 18 missiles. Aegis has a radius of 190 km and may find targets at an altitude of about 320 km.

The system uses SM-2 and SM-3 missiles. SM-3 may hit targets at an altitude of 180 km.

Shlemov said that the United Shipbuilding Corporation signed 95% of contracts for 2012 with Gosoboronzakaz. Five modernized Borey-A missiles will be constructed.

Five strategic subs of project 955 will be built. The contract on Borey-A was signed on May 29, 2012. 5 Sevmash subs will be built before 2020. “Knyaz Vladimir” is already under construction. “Yuri Dolgoruki”, “Alexander Nevsky” and “Vladimir Monomakh” are the three new subs to be launched in 2012-2013.
