Special representative of the UN and Arab League (LAS) Lakhdar Brahimi said at the UN General Assembly that only the Syrian population should decide its future, ITAR-TASS reports.

The Algerian diplomat will visit Cairo in a few days and meet LAS Secretary General Nabil Elaraby.

Brahimi’s speech at the General Assembly followed UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who called for a common approach for Syria and cooperation.

Syrian representative in the UN Bashar Jafari said that Damascus was willing to cooperate.

78-year old Brahimi replaced Kofi Annan as the new representative of the UN and LAS on September. He will operate at the coordination bureau of the UN in Damascus and monitor the processes. He will have about 30 specialists working under his authority.
