Karachay-Cherkessia celebrates the 19th anniversary of the Republic

Today Karachay-Cherkessia celebrates the anniversary of the Republic’s foundation and the Day of the Karachay-Cherkess peoples' solidarity. On this date 19 years ago the law of Russian Federation transformed several autonomous regions into federal subjects, including the Karachay-Cherkess autonomous region, which belonged to the federal subject of Stavropol Krai, RIA Novsti reports.

This anniversary was celebrated for the first time in 2004 on the initiative of several public organizations and the elders of the Republic and was declared an official holiday. President Boris Ebzeyev decorated several distinguished citizens of Karachay-Cherkessia.

In his ceremonial speech M. Ebzeyev stressed the importance of this new celebration for Karachay-Cherkess peoples’ lives, for their unity.

“The wisdom of the Karachay and Cherkess peoples is the guarantee of the Republic’s unity, as well as the unity of the whole Russian Federation. Therefore it is vitally important, that our people people preserve the ancient traditions of our way of live and of fraternal friendship between our peoples”

A number of ceremonial and entertainment events are planned. Some charity activities are also being undertaken. According to the tradition, those who marry on the 3rd July or give birth on this date are being congratulated. The solemnities will continue untill the 4th July.
