Opposition rally breaks up in Moscow

A massive opposition rally broke up Saturday night in downtown Moscow, Russian media report.

A meeting on Saturday gathered opposition activists from all groups, including communists, social democrats, liberals and nationalists. Representatives of environmental and gay movements were also among the protesters.

Activists demand an end to political persecutions, the holding of unscheduled presidential and parliamentary elections, freedom of speech and assembly.

Some 20-30 thousand people took part in the rally, according to media. The opposition leaders believe that figure is around 100 thousand.
