World Press on parliamentary elections in Georgia (October 3, 2012)
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe Wall Street Journal published an article headlined 'Opposition Hands Setback to Georgia Leader'. "A loss of parliament would effectively end the political career of Mr. Saakashvili, 44 years old, who steps down next year because of a presidential term limit," the author of the article, Alan Cullison, believes. "Mr. Saakashvili's rivals say he is planning a comeback as prime minister. Changes to Georgia's constitution set to take effect next year will shift many powers from the president to the prime minister. Mr. Saakashvili has declined to say what his exact plans are, but a divided parliament would likely bar him from such a move. The prime minister's job could even go to his rival, Bidzina Ivanishvili, the businessman who founded the Georgian Dream party," the article reads.
According to The Times, Bidzina Ivanishvili is now one step away from power. "If the Georgian Dream coalition manages to subvert Saakashvili's government, it will be the greatest shock Georgia experienced since 2003, when the opposition overthrew Eduard Shevarnadze.
The Georgian president underestimated his rival, Bidzina Ivanishvili, and now his party has lost to the Georgian Dream coalition, an article published by Le Figaro reads. Some people still support Saakshvili, but they are now in the minority, the author says.
