Yesterday evening US President Barack Obama approved additional sanctions against Iran, RIA Novosti reported.

The document imposes sanctions on those who cooperate with the Iranian government in the spheres of uranium production, oil trafficking, gas production and the chemical industry and those who provide the relevant companies with insurance.

According to Vladimir Yevseyev, the head of the Social and Political Reasearch Center, these sanctions won't be effective. The amount of trade between the United States and Iran is minimal and the US administration doesn't have enough power to influence the Iranian economy using unilateral sanctions.

What is much more important, is that the US is pressuring its allies to stop buying Iranian oil.

These sanctions are more of a symbolic move, necessary during the presidential campaign, Yevseyev believes.
