Special envoy of the UN and LAS for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi (Algeria) has met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow. Brahimi noted that, despite failure of the cease-fire initiative, mediators must continue attempts to start a dialogue.

Lavrov confirmed support of Brahimi’s activities within the framework of the Geneva principles of the action group.

The Geneva principles for settlement of the Syrian conflict were formulated by permanent members of the UNSC and Syria’s neighbours. According to them, Syria needs to form a temporary government with all sides of the conflict involved to develop a constitutional reform, switch to a multi-party system and form new structures of administration.

Brahimi said that the UN was not planning any peacekeeping missions in Syria.
