No new dams to be built at Iran's Lake Urmia
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaIranian Energy Minister Majid Namju said that dam construction was banned at the Urmia Lake, but all dams being constructed before implementation of restrictions will be completed, Mehr reports.
The lake has 19 dams providing water for agricultural enterprises and industrial facilities.
70% of Urmia has dried out. One liter contains 400 grams of salt, compared with 160-170 grams earlier. The UN provided $135 million to Iran to save the lake. Jabbar Vetenfred, director of the main directorate for CIS states and border rivers of the Iranian Energy Ministry, said that Iran was planning to discuss use of River Araks water to fill Urmia.
