Russia has first population increase since USSR

Russia has demonstrated the first increase of the population since the USSR era. The Labour Ministry registered a surplus of 10,200 people in October 2012.

The North Caucasian Federal District had 63,500 babies born in January-September 2012 (about 235 a day in average). The Ural, Siberian and the Far East Federal District showed positive demography.

The Central, North-Western, Privolzhsky and Southern Federal Districts still have population decline.

The birth rate in Russia increased by 7%, death rate dropped by 1.5%.

Russian Labour Minister Maksim Topilin expressed hopes in November that Russia would have a population surplus.
