Population increases in Russia

In 2012 the population of Russia increased by 246 thousand people and constituted 143.3 million people.

Russia is a country of so-called demographic abnormality. The birth rate in Russia is relatively low, as in highly-industrialized countries, but the death rate is high as in developing ones, which explains the rapid population decrease experienced in the recent decades.

The population increase mainly takes place in Muslim regions of the North Caucasus.
