Russian parliament approves bill abolishing direct gubernatorial elections

The State Duma today approved a bill allowing regions to choose between direct and indirect gubernatorial elections.

The document minimizes the effect of the law restoring the popular vote in gubernatorial elections, which was introduced after the massive protest campaign of December 2011.
