Alexey German Sr. dies

Russian film director Alexey German Sr. has died at the age of 74, Ekho Moskvy reports.

He was born to writer Yuri German in Leningrad on July 20, 1938. He graduated at the Leningrad State Institute for Theater, Music and Cinematography in 1960. He worked at the Smolensk Drama Theater, then at the Bolshoi Drama Theater with Georgy Tovstonogov. He became the second director of Lenfilm in 1964.

German Sr. became the secretary of the USSR Union of Cinematographers in 1985. He organized the Cinema Studio of the First and Experimental Film and became its art director in 1990. He became the People’s Artist of Russia in 1994.
