The conflict in Syria has been ongoing for two years. The Muslim Brotherhood has urged people all over the world to start protests against President Bashar al-Assad. Charity organizations commemorate victims of the conflict by lighting thousands of candles.

Veniamin Popov, director of the Center for Partnership of Civilizations of the MGIMO, told Vestnik Kavkaza that further escalation could cause a catastrophe.

The expert says that the war may cause a schism in the country and have negative impact on neighbour states (Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq). He pointed out the Kurdish problem. Over 30 million Kurds live in four countries.

Popov believes that the regional catastrophe that may happen will not end. Western states were urged to understand the repercussions.

Concerning Iranian influence, Popov added that Iran was not part of the problem. The Geneva-2 talks need attendance of Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. It will be essential for Afghanistan.
