Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukamedov today issued a statement devoted to recent media reports concerning a possible ban on dual citizenship in Turkmenistan.

Turkmen media have reported that the authorities were going to stop issuing passports for those people who already had foreign citizenship.

The president said these reports misinterpreted the actual information. "As the country's president and guarantor of rights and freedoms I should say that all Turkmen citizens, no matter what their sex, ethnic origin, faith or social status, will receive new passports," he said.
