Russia increases combat capabilities of base in Kyrgyzstan's Kant
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaRussia is planning to increase the combat capabilities of its military base in the Kyrgyz city of Kant, the Russian Deputy Defense Minister, Anatoly Antonov, said today in Bishkek.
"The Minister of Defense visited the base in Kant and ordered the preparation of an action plan to enhance the combat capabilities of the base. All relevant instructions have been issued, and tomorrow they will be implemented," RIA News quotes Antonov.
Russian Deputy Defense Minister stressed that Kyrgyzstan and Russia are interested in the development of military cooperation.
In 2009 Russia leased the airbase in Kant for 49 years and, under the terms of the treaty, it may be extended another 25 years. Moscow pays Bishkek over $4.5 million annualy.
