77 people killed in train accident in Spain

77 people died and 143 were injured when a passenger train went of the rails not far from Santiago de Compostela at 8.42 pm yesterday, making it the worst railway accident of Spain in the past 40 years, RIA Novosti reports.

The train carried 218 passengers. 13 carriages turned over. The accident happened on the railway to Ferrol in the Galicia Province.

A spokesman in Galicia Samuel Juarez notes that the train was moving at a speed of 220km/h on a section with the maximum permissible speed of 80km/h. RENFE officials say that it was moving at a speed of 180km/h.

No Russians were injured in the accident.
