New power plant in Adjara

Construction of a new power plant began in Adjara today. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili and Georgian Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze.

The power output of the Shuakhevi power plant will be 178 MW, and annual electricity output – 445 100 000 KW/h, the Ministry of Energy of Georgia reports.

The project envisages the construction of two dams and a water reservoir.

In addition, investors are beginning  construction work at the Shalta power plant, which is part of a cascade of hydroelectric power plants. Its capacity is 5.8 MW and annual electricity output - 20.8 million kW/h.

The cost of both projects is $300 million. The completion of both projects is scheduled for the second half of 2016.

The Indian company Tata Power (40%), the Norwegian Clean Energy Invest (40%) and IFC InfraVentures (20%) are taking part in building a cascade on the river Acharistskali.
