Ankara will host an international conference entitled ‘The Caucasian War of the 19th century: Realpolitik and ‘memory wars’ on September 30.
Attendants of the conference will discuss the key problems of the Caucasus War of the 19th century and its impact on the region in the context of interests of the Great Powers in the North Caucasus (primarily the Russian and Ottoman Empires). The dramatic events of the Caucasus War related to merging of the North Caucasus with the Russian Empire will be discussed from the viewpoint of the Realpolitik and within the framework of the international problem of that time, the Eastern Question.
The Caucasus War of the 19th century caused a set of historic events that became a target of the so-called ‘memory wars’ – a collision of ideological concepts of the past that come into conflict in the North Caucasus today. Participants of the conference plan to consider the role of the ‘memory wars’ provoked by the Caucasus War on the features and pace of the political processes in the modern North Caucasus Region.
The international conference will become another step towards development of cooperation between Russian and Turkish scientists, countries of South Caucasus on the background of deep and unbiased studies of history of the Caucasus Region.
The conference will be attended by notable science centers of Moscow (MSU, MGIMO), Russian republics of the North Caucasus, Abkhazia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Turkey will be represented by officials of science and expert communities, state and public figures.
The meeting will become the first among round-table conferences and seminars for the nodal problems of history of the Caucasian peoples.
The conference will be held within the framework of the cooperation agreement signed between the MSU named after M.V. Lomonosov and the Turkish University for Economics and Technology (TOBB-ETÜ).
The North-South Center for Political Analysis was the organizer of the talks.
The conference will be held at the University for Economics and Technology (TOBB-ETÜ) in Ankara (Söğütözü Avenue, 43, Ankara) at 10.00 am on September 30, 2013.
