A. Baklanov: We should support Assad's regime

Advisor to the Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Deputy Chairman of the Association of Russian diplomats, Andrey Baklanov told about the prevailing situation in Syria and the relationship between Russia and the U.S. on this issue. According to the expert, the problem of chemical weapons was artificially faced-off in order to distract the participants of the process from more important issues.

The positive point of the relations between Russia and the United States is that both countries have moved from confrontation to acting together on this issue, which, in turn, should contribute to a more rapid solution of the problem. There is a possibility that Russia and the United States will move to the mechanism of co-sponsorship for the first time in a long period. According to Baklanov, Bashar al-Assad needs the support of the Russian Federation.

In Syria, the team of UN experts, operating under UN Security Council resolution, which was developed jointly by Russia and the United States , started its work. The document commits Damascus to destroy all chemical weapons. Moscow and Washington also agreed to convene the "Geneva- 2" conference in November. However, in Syria, there is a further radicalization of the armed opposition , which is not ready to negotiate with the representatives of the Assad regime . The United States also continues to insist on his resignation and, together with its partners in the region, to arm the rebels.
