Oil extraction in the area started on September 11, stopped on September 25 due to problems with the gas pipeline and restarted on October 6.

Geological studies of the field in the last 40 years say that Kashagan has about 4.8 billion tons of oil and 1 trillion cubic meters of gas. About 10 billion out of its 38 billion barrels of oil are extractable.
