Experts discuss migration problems of Russia

Lomonosov, Doctor of Politics; Ruslan Kurbanov, a Caucasus researcher, scientist of the Institute for Oriental Studies of the RAS, a Candidate of Political Science; Galina Bogolyobova, President of the Russian Slav Foundation; Maksim Shevchenko, a member of the Russian Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations, a TV journalist; Asif Maggeramov, President of the Russian Federal National-Cultural Autonomy of Azerbaijanis, have discussed the events in Biryulyovo, bills on migration and interethnic problems.Bogolyobova emphasized at the start of the talks that the legal basis of the past 20 years needed adjustments. Interethnic relations should be regulated by local authorities, she believes. The expert noted flaws in the existing migration law of Russia, such as the unclear sources of financing for deportation of illegal migrants. She stressed the need to rid television of aggressive shows.Omarov said that the authorities were not working properly on interethnic problems.Kurbanov agreed and pointed out that government was not taking preventive measures. He noted that the police had ignored the tensions at Biryulyovo for over a year. He believes that adaption of migrants is a multistage process. Russian cultural centers should be used for popularization of culture.Shevchenko called the events at Moscow’s Biryulyovo a rebellion against social injustice, not against migrants. He added that such disorders in the Caucasus was similar. The expert proposed the introduction of active people to municipal offices to prevent crime.
