Sergei Markov: xenophobia harms multinational nature of Russia

 

Xenophobic, anti-immigrant sentiments harm the multinational nature of Russia, Vice-Rector of the Plekhanov Russian Economic University, Sergei Markov, told Vestnik Kavkaza. The expert noted that the situation threatens not only the foundations of the multi-ethnic state, but also the foreign policy of the Eurasian integration projects in the post-soviet space headed by Russia.Markov said that the main task is to prevent the consolidation of these unhealthy trends in society, adding that the cause of popular nationalist sentiments is often the impunity of the crimes committed by citizens of foreign countries. Markov said that in order to decrease anti-immigrant sentiments in the country, the issues of criminal activities should be addressed by the authorities.Markov said that it is also necessary to work on the decriminalization of diasporas.
