Belarusian and Azerbaijani Presidents Alexander Lukashenko and Ilham Aliyev found new cooperation fields at a meeting in Baku yesterday. Sergey Musiyenko, head of the EcooM Analytical Center, believes that said that the opening of the Belarusian Embassy in Azerbaijan on Wednesday had been the main news. He reminded that the embassy has appeared only recently, despite 20 years of Belarusian-Azerbaijani relations.

The expert expressed confidence that bilateral relations between the presidents would be boosted after the meeting. He reminded that trade turnover had increased six-fold to $300 million a year since 2006. Musiyenko noted that assemblage in Ganja and the grand projects for the petroleum industry, agriculture and education meant significant potential.

Seymour Aliyev, head of the Russian version of Trend, reminded that economic relations between Azerbaijan and Belarus had always had potential for development. He said that production of engineering equipment had been discussed. Azerbaijan has been manufacturing Belarusian tractors and trucks for a long time. Production of the vehicles keeps localizing in Azerbaijan, about 40-50% of vehicle parts are produced in Azerbaijan. Lukashenko invited Azerbaijan to invest in agriculture, petrochemistry and pharmaceutics.

Commenting on plans to increase investments in Belarusian industry, Seymour Aliyev pointed out that Azerbaijan had intensified investments in foreign projects in the past years. Azerbaijan is building a petrochemical complex, a refinery and a port in Turkey. It invests more in opening petroleum stations, construction of factories in Georgia. It has built a maritime terminal in the Black Sea. Money is invested in Ukraine, Romania and other states. Overall the expert does not consider Belarus an exception and notes that Azerbaijan invests in agriculture, pharmaceutics, industry, as well as petrochemistry.
