Sergey Levedev, Executive Secretary of the CIS, told Vestnik Kavkaza that the declarations by the new Georgian authorities about a normalization of relations with Russia inspired optimism. He noted that Georgia was not a member of the CIS, but the doors to join the Commonwealth were always open for it.

Lebedev also said that heads of CIS member-states had met in Minsk in October and discussed the need to keep the organization working. The executive secretary believes that the structure is essential for solution of economic problems, enforcement of security, development of culture, education, as well as sports and contacts between organizations.

He reminded that CIS prime ministers had signed a set of documents in different fields to strengthen cooperation. This includes the plan of events to mark the 70th anniversary of victory in World War Two in 2015.

The official added that the CIS Coordinating Council of Veterans had recently held a forum in Moscow. Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia had taken part in the talks.
