The A Fair Russia Party has introduced a bill stipulating harsher punishments for people vandalizing World War Two monuments. According to the bill, vandalism of such monuments will be punished with up to a 1 million ruble fine and/or 7 years in prison.

Oleg Mikheyev, one of the authors of the bill, said that such sanctions would rid people of ideas to use the monuments for their dubious performances.

Sergey Goncharov, a member of the security commission of Moscow legislative authorities, and General Sergey Kanchukov, ex-Intelligence Chief of Forces of the Russian Defense Ministry in Chechnya, approved the initiative. Gonchariv warned that the new punishments should not turn into a form of persecution to get people life imprisonment. Kanchukov proposed jailing terms to be increase from 7 to 10 for insulting the memory of the war.
