Azerbaijan opens highest meteorological station in CIS
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan has opened a meteorological station at the highest point among CIS countries – 4172 m, on the peak of Tufandag mountain, the head of the ministry’s press-service Irada Ibragimova said, Trend reports.
It is the third Azerbaijani meteorological station in the complex of the hydrometeorological and ecological science research center. The first station on Shakhdag is at a height of 3700 m, the third is at 2700 m on Mount Shakhdiuziu and was launched in 2009. The stations use solar panels for energy. They are operating for the science research complex of the Bazardiuziu, Shakhdag and Tufandag ecosystems.
The largest glaciers in Azerbaijan are near the peak of Tufandag. Global warming has led to melting of the glacier. The stations are monitoring the glaciers and climatic changes.
